O'Neil tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still in high school. She made it to the 100th round due to the fact that judges were awed at her singing performances. O'Neil was praised highly by judges, but she suffered substantial losses during the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell to the bottom 3 and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were shocked, and they recommended to the audience to vote for Melissa as the contestant with the best ability to sing. O'Neil's performance was so always top-quality that he did not fall into the top 3. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and was the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in time of the show. O'Neil was contacted immediately from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
